I have a leak or should I say small weep from my tank . After a lot of cleaning and looking I'm convinced it's coming from the area where the hinge joins the tank at the rear where the hinge is spot welded . Has anyone else had this problem. ?

This is the 1st i've heard of a tank leak. But have you considered this....the hinge area is also the low area of the tank, and if there was a slight leak somewhere else under the tank like for example the oval plate that bolts the fuel pump on, it might leak there and drain downwards under the tank and pool up near the hinge area being the lowest point. So i'd lift the tank or better yet remove it and look for leaks there or any area thats a exit point. It may just be the fuel pump gasket is bad or the bolts are just loose or some such thing. But if U R under warranty just have them look at it.

Thanks Daz I've done a lot of that sort of investigation I've even replaced the tank overflow pipe in case it had been pinched .

You are sure it is not the snap-on connector of the fuel line? The blue, locking guard?

But, it sounds like you ruled that out.

So, leave in 1/4 tank fuel, hang the tank vertically with the hinge weld down. You now have fuel only covering the suspected area, but deep enough to create a pressure head to force the leak. I'm guessing 1/4 tank, but the idea is to reduce the leak problem, to only one variable.

They can't fight us, then. We did their job.

No fuel covering the fuel line the cover for the fuel pump, or anything, just those bottom welds. Take a picture of it leaking.

Candle wax or oil clay or whatever you have in Oz to temporarily mend the weld area. Take a picture of that fix, now not leaking. The fuel will eat thru the wax and now show very clearly the pinhole in the weld. Take a picture of that. Turn the tank in for warranty with those pictures and Don't take No for an answer. Just take in the tank, not the Bird, and borrow the best Tiger they have and don't bring it back until you get the new tank.

Two can play the hostage game. When they ask for the Tiger back, you ask for your tank. And you show them the letter you sent up the line, over their head, to Triumph, already. Pictures and everything. Ask for your tank and ignore talk about the Tiger.

Thanks Dizze there's only one part of your plan that I don't like and would change . That is I would much prefer a Bonney The interesting thing about this leak is that it won't leak unless the tank is tightened down if I leave the front tank bolt loose overnight no leak . The tension that is on the hinge area when it is tight is sufficient to keep this micro crack open.

Dropped the bike into the dealer this morning they say it is leaking from a seam . I will be anxiously waiting for triumphs decision . This is the first night without my bird in the garage for nearly two years I miss her already.

No decision to make, it's leaking from a seam that's warranty work = poor manufacture.

My tank got a crack in the weld seam after the Far Cairn Run. Got it fixed under warranty even thought the bike is over 3 years old. I decided to get it painted, still black and white but a bit different from before. I will take some photos to see what you guys think.

I own a 13 t bird and I noticed a fuel smell and when the bike sits overnight a see fuel in the area between the seat and tank.. It looks like it is leaking from the same area you are talking about. Dropped it off at the dealer . Waiting to hear back from them.

Same problem with my 2013 1600 T-Bird. Didn't leak for 1 1/2 years. Same place - welded bracket and the hinge joint. Still had 3 months warranty left. After sending pics of the wet spots (after raising the tank) they promptly send a replacement tank to my dealer. Happy now!!! Am wondering if the 2013's had more of this type problem.

Just discovered my leak on 13 Storm. Anyone ever try to fix? I'm sure the dealer won't do anything now. Same spot. Weld seam

2013 Storm. Matte Graphite. De-cat with home made elbows. Short Tors. Black ceramic coat headers and pipes. Re-welded fuel tank seam. Red Kote interior tank sealant. Replaced crappy triumph hose clamps. Aukey DR02 front and rear dash cam. Leatherbug fork tool bag from down under. And custom tunes by SLCharger, NAH, and Daz. Thanks guys.

I have the dreaded fuel tank leak. Bottom LH spot weld on the plate that the rear bracket is welded to. Got some good info from Peteronkarra and another chap from the FB page on fixing it. All now welded up, paint tomorrow then put in some Red Kote tank sealer just to make sure.

Yes, another Thunderbird obstacle overcome, looking back I've had my fair share of issues but it's given me a ton of fun and it's still a keeper.

I have to say the first touch of the mig welder to the tank was a puckering moment

That is problem I still have to encounter on the Bird

But I can easily follow you, the scary moment you ignite the TIG on the tank.

I once witnessed a guy, try welding his fuel tank, and he was blown 6 meter away, the tank ruptured as well did his eardrums.
He got away with minor burns.

Even filling with inert gas, I feel uncomfortable.

Kim, I washed the tank out twice with a water based degreaser, then carefully blew it out with a heat gun, circumstances meant that it sat for a day or so after. I then taped over the two large holes under the tank, flipped it over with the repair area downhill, then filled with Argon for ten minutes. I did want to leave the gas trickle in while I was welding but I only had one mini gas bottle regulator which I needed for the Mig.

There was no petrol smell at all in the tank after treatment, I was even tempted to introduce a flame prior but decided to just get on with it.

I will be doing the Red Kote treatment later today.

Not really possible mate as I needed both hands to swirl the product around in the tank , I would need a borescope camera but don't have one. The product has excellent instructions.
